From the Library

We were excited that the winter book order had the last book in James Marshall's  George and Martha series, George and Martha Encore. We've been reading other old favorites too, including the Caldecott Medal winner from 1962 The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Some of us are still hoping for a very snowy day, while others are ready for spring. Ask your daughter about Tales for Very Picky Eaters. How did that father get his son to eat broccoli? What is Growing Oatmeal?! In keeping with themes of trying new foods, we also read Rosemary Wells' beloved book Yoko. If you are asked to pack sushi in a lunchbox, Yoko may be the inspiration.

Winter Work in Technology

This month the students have been documenting a variety of winter activities.  Using either the Draw and Tell app or the My Story app, the girls took pictures of the snowflakes they created.  Next, they explained how to make these snowflakes by recording their voices.  The students also used BrainPop Jr. to watch a video about winter then create a book, complete with pictures and voices, in My Story about what we do in the winter.  

A Busy Start to the New Year

We have been busy here in the New Year! So busy, in fact, that there has been little time for blog posts! A peek into what we have been doing:

Learning about word families.

Cheering on the Ravens.

Reading more Jan Brett books. We read The Mitten and talked about the characters, the setting, and the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Our characters found a home in their very own mitten!

Learning about addition and subtraction and playing a game to practice our skills.

Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that we may be different on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside. We found that the same was true for eggs!

Learning about snowflakes and making our own. Snowflakes are symmetrical and all have six sides, yet no two snowflakes are alike!

Intro to Jan Brett

We have begun our study of author/illustrator Jan Brett. Her detailed illustrations bring setting and characters to life and we will enjoy exploring her books into the new year. This week we read The Hat and learned to identify the characters and the setting of the story. The girls created their own hats and were able to retell the story using the characters. We learned about Jan Brett's favorite character, Hedgie the Hedgehog, and discovered him hiding among the pages of each of her books! We also watched a video in which she taught us how to draw Hedgie. It was especially exciting to pull out our watercolors to put the finishing touches on our drawings.

We want to thank all of our wonderful parents for sharing your daughters with us during these past few months! We have loved getting to know each and every one of your girls and we can't wait for the exciting months ahead! Have a wonderful and restful holiday and we will see you in the New Year!

Brush Bots!

Last week, the girls completed their Brush Bots by adding eyes and other details.   Then they tested them in a variety of Winter Olympic arenas like the luge, figure skating, cross country skiing, and speed skating.  When we return from winter break, kindergarten will participate in The Hour of Code.
