Kindergarteners are waiting for their ceramic islands to come out of the kiln so they can draw maps. Meanwhile, they are using some everyday office supplies (tape, sticky notes, binder reinforcement stickers, highlighters) mixed with paint and sharpie to create abstract paintings exploring edges and connecting lines. They had the additional challenge of choosing part of their painting where the white paper could still shine through.

Dissecting Tulips
The kindergarteners put on their scientist/botanist hats this week. The girls have been learning all about spring flowers: their characteristics (petals, stems, etc), similarities, and differences. They were extremely excited to let their green thumbs shine as they got the chance to dissect a tulip and recorded their findings on their iPads. Be sure to ask your daughters what they discovered!

Spanish: Fun with Sock Puppets
The girls have been learning fruits and vegetables in Spanish. They love feeding them to Lucia, and they are learning how to talk about which ones they like and which ones they do not like. Yesterday we made puppet shows with the app Sock Puppets. Here is a peek at a few of the girls.

Daffodils, Time, and L.A.
During language arts, Mrs. McMahon's class sang and practiced tracking the words in our latest spring song from our Poetry Book. Afterwards, we highlighted several popcorn words as well as words that are difficult to decode, such as "celebrate." Then the girls illustrated the poem with their special friend.
Mrs. Martin's class got a chance to explore their surprise sack and then went on a vowel hunt.
In science, Mrs. Martin's class began exploring daffodils and noticed the differences between the species.
In math, both classes listened to The Grouch Ladybug and broke apart to complete different activities. Mrs. Martin's girls colored in the characters, while Mrs. McMahon's class filled in the numbers on a large clock. Tomorrow the girls will match the characters to their correct time from the story.

Gilman Playday
The girls had a fabulous time over at Gilman today. They met some new friends from both Gilman and Roland Park while playing with math manipulatives, creating a sculpture that had to fit inside a small container in their Maker Space lab, and playing cooperative games in their multi-purpose room. Afterwards, we all ate pizza together. It was an awesome Friday!

Time
The kindergarteners have been working on telling time to the hour on an analog clock. Yesterday, Mrs. McMahon's girls also practiced writing the digital time as well.
Today, both classes made ladybug clocks and read The Grouch Ladybug. As the girls listened to the story, they moved the hands on their clocks to coincide with the grouchy ladybug's journey.

Exciting Eggs
This morning, the girls went on an egg hunt around our classroom today. Each egg they found had a either a popcorn word or CVC word. They then recorded the words and read them to a teacher.
Mrs. Martin's girls played charades with their new word families.
Mrs. McMahon's girls learned what sound the short i vowel makes--be sure to ask your daughter! The girls made pigs filled with with their short i words.
