French: Rainbow Bridge

The girls have been working very hard on learning their color words.

Today they followed colored footsteps to cross a color bridge.  They had to name each color before stepping onto it.

The girls had a blast cheering for each
other along the way.

A is for Apple!

This week has been all about APPLES! We have focused on the letter A, practicing the sound it makes and finding it around our classroom. The vowels are often the trickiest yet most important letter sounds to learn so we will be working hard on the vowel sounds all year.

Thank you to all of our parents for sending in apples so we could have a week full of predicting, observing and recording. We observed the colors, sizes, smells, and even tastes of the apples. We made predictions about what was inside the apples and found that even though they were all different on the outside, they all looked the same on the inside! From there we were thrilled to discover that the same is true for people! It was fun comparing our hair color, eye color, skin color, heights, hand and foot sizes and realizing that even though we are so different on the outside, we all have brains, hearts, bones, etc. on the inside. What an exciting discovery!

Our baskets of apples gave us the opportunity to sort, count, and graph the different colors of apples we had. With our graphs we could easily see which color we had the most of (red) and the least (green). Pictures make everything easier to see! We continue to practice writing and ordering our numbers and filling ten frames.

We can't wait for our Farm Trip next Friday! Remember to wear clothes that can get muddy and tough shoes - boots or sneakers are a great option! If your daughter stays at school after the field trip please send her lunch as normal. We will see you in the classroom by 8:15 on Friday morning!

French: Fun with Colors

The girls have been learning to say their colors in French.  We did an experiment in French where we added food coloring to water to form different colors.  After starting with the three basic colors -- bleu/blue, rouge/red, and jaune/yellow, the girls predicted how to get other colors by mixing the colors they already had.  Then they tested their predictions by mixing the colored water and observing what happened.

Happy Birthday Bryn Mawr !

We had a wonderful week learning about the history and the five Founders of
The Bryn Mawr School.
Each child was one of the five Founders.

We explored the campus and discovered the Founder's Bench where we found our names!
Please ask me who I was.
Mary Garrett   Elizabeth King   Julia Rogers   M.Carey Thomas  Mamie Quinn

We learned that Miss Edith Hamilton was the first Headmistress
We found her portrait in the library and told her what we would like to learn.

We celebrated during math time making and eating a healthy Bryn Mawr daisy using different shapes.
MMMM we loved eating math.

During our Founder's Tea Party we learned why Mary Garrett wanted to start a girl's school.
Ask me why and I will tell you.

We recorded with care drawings of the five Founders in our Story Books and labeled who they were.

WE LOVE BEING PART OF THE BRYN MAWR SCHOOL!

Art: Drip, tip or blow

Building on their discovery during their painting with different materials experience, the girls made a painting with all drips, tips and blows.  They started with beautiful handmade papers in rich colors then used spoons to apply a puddle of color.  Then, they tipped and twirled the paper to control the direction of paint or blew the paint into spindly lines with a straw.  Of course, they practiced first on an iPad app that has a drip and tip tool.  They also were introduced to the idea of transparency which is the see-through quality of some paints.  Ask your daughters if she was more mesmerized by the puddles of swirling colors or the skinny crooked lines when making her painting?

Technology: Scribble My Story

Welcome to technology class! The Kindergarten girls have been working hard exploring apps on their iPads. We are currently learning about Scribbly My Story. The girls created a three page story entitled "All About Me." The text is pre-written and they are able to change words in order to personalize it. For example, when talking about their favorite foods, they could choose from fruit, cupcakes, and spaghetti. It turns out we have a lot of cupcake lovers! They illustrated their books using tools from scribble press in order to draw pictures of themselves, their home, and their favorite foods. The picture below shows them immersed in their work.
