Reading Stamina and Body Spelling

Mrs. McMahon's class worked on their reading stamina this morning.  We reviewed the three different ways to read a book then the girls went into silent reading.  Ask your daughter how long they quietly read...it was impressive!

Mrs. Martin's class worked with their popcorn words.  The girls got a chance to body spell each of these special words.

Mrs. McMahon's class started a winter craft--a special winter hat.  The girls are all very excited to add their puff ball on top!

Hour of Code

This week, your daughter participated in the Hour of Code.  “The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries” (hourofcode.com).  We use this as an introduction to the programming your daughter will be doing throughout the year.  Learning the basics of programming reinforces problem solving and logic skills.

In kindergarten, we learned how to use basic directions (left, right, up, down) to control an Angry Bird.  Next, we will learn how to use the Kodable app to learn more about programming and in the spring, we will use path to control the Dash robots!

If you would like your daughter to explore more at home, use this link.  Please note, different activities run on different devices and are appropriate for various ages.

Club Day and The "Mitten" project

Today was our first Lower School Clubs Assembly--be sure to ask your daughter which club she participated in!

Both classes are working on a project where the girls will be able to retell the story of The Mitten using character cards.  These will be making their way home next week.

Hedgehogs and Magic Milk

During language arts, Mrs. McMahon's class continued working with the "et" word family.
And Mrs. Martin's class continued illustrating their hedgehog books.
During math, both classes began our 2-dimensional shapes unit.  Be sure to ask your daughter what a vertice is!
Mrs. Martin's class delved more into learning about hedgehogs and learned all about their hibernation, predators,  and what they eat to survive.

Mrs. McMahon's class conducted a magic milk experiment during science.  Be sure to ask your daughters what happened!

Gingerbread Houses

Twizzlers, marshmallows, and gumdrops, OH MY!  We decorated our houses today and the girls had a great time!

During math, Mrs. Martin's class worked more on graphing...

...and Mrs. McMahon's class discussed another one of Bryn Mawr's core values--resilience.  We shared stories about how each of us had to be resilient and then read Giraffes Can't Dance.  The girls shared different things they couldn't do yet and we talked about how we have to be resilient and keep working towards our goals.

Gingerbread EVERYWHERE

We are knee deep in our gingerbread unit and the girls are LOVING it.  Today, both classes used our Writer's Workshop time to start stories featuring Jan Brett's beloved hedgehog.  The girls will be working on these stories for the next two weeks.

In math, the girls reviewed graphing and graphed various gingerbread items (houses, rolling pins, etc).

Mrs. McMahon's class worked with the short e vowel sound using the "et" word family.

Mrs. Martin's girls had a chance to buddy read Jan Brett books on our new bean bag chairs.

Mrs. McMahon's class read Georgie the Gingerbread Fairy and made gingerbread playdough!  Here is a link to the recipe if you would like to make some at home.

Acting and Even/Odd

Calling all acting agents!  The kindergarten girls re-enacted The Mitten by Jan Brett and truly went "all in" with their acting.

In math, both classes spent another day working with even and odd numbers.  Be sure to ask your daughter which activity she participated in!
