Kindergarten Zest

This is a very enthusiastic kindergarten class!  There's nothing better than listening to the girls singing as they walk in their kindergarten line from class to class.  They have been adding their own Halloween words to some of our songs and have enjoyed being creative.

Becoming Authors and Halloween Lanterns

We are becoming Authors and Illustrators.  We read the book, Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert.  We created our own leaf person or animal from leaves collected on a sunny Fall walk.  We took a picture of our leaf creation and imported it into Scribble Press.  We then decided where our leaf person or animal was going to go and what was going to happen to them.  We became illustrators as we drew the scenery around our leaf creation using Scribble Press.  Our teachers printed out our illustrations and then we began to write!

                       WE ARE THRILLED TO BE
                  AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS!

                                             HAPPY HALLOWEEN !
Halloween math fun.  We made lanterns using parallel lines.
We can't wait to bring them home today!

From the Library

Kindergarteners  are wrapping up their unit on George and Martha, two great hippo friends. James Marshall offers amusing, heart-felt lessons on being a friend. What does George do when Martha continues to serve dreaded pea soup? How does Martha help George when he is too nervous to jump from the high diving board? And what about that cuckoo clock? Each book contains five very short linked stories.
Ask your daughter about George's gold tooth, about who was scared at the movies, about Martha and the Mexican jumping beans. This series is an oldie but goodie and a big hit with the kindergarten crowd.

PE- Balance

Kindergarten just finished a Balance unit where we learned many different body positions that challenge our muscles and balance.  We also used implements that made it even harder, and had to move working on dynamic balance.

We just started a Throwing and Catching unit and have learned many different ways to throw.  The most important thing about catching is to use our hands and keep our eyes on the ball.

French: Les Fruits

The girls have been working very hard to learn the French words for fruits.  Last week the girls worked together to make a fruit salad for Emiline.  Today they worked in pairs to review their fruit vocabulary words.  One girl would name a fruit in French and the other girl had to try to find it.  They did a great job practicing their French skills and their cooperation skills at the same time.

Technology: iDiary

This week, we worked with iDiary in order to document a nature walk the girls had recently taken. For their assignment, the girls inserted two pictures of leaves they had taken on the walk into their diaries. Then, they labeled the leaves using the keyboard. Typing takes a bit of practice but it is becoming easier and easier for them to find the letters they need. The girls did excellent jobs choosing among the many tools when creating their entries. The image below gives you an idea of what each girl created.

We Have The Bryn Mawr Spirit!

We had fun celebrating Bryn Mawr Spirit Day with our flags and hats. It was exciting being part of our first Bryn Mawr Parade as we cheered in French!
                                                          "Allez Bryn Mawr!"
We talked about the Lower School values that we have learned this year, compassion
and resilience, and how they help to create the Bryn Mawr Spirit.

Our search for Dogwood trees on campus.

We were inquisitive scientists, with iPads in hand, as we observed and recorded our observations.

We loved our first experience at D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) during Assembly time last Friday.  Everyone in the Lower School was reading, including our teachers.

Art: Arranging Elizabeth Murray Shapes

The girls analyzed a series of Elizabeth Murray paintings noticing that her shapes usually touch each other and sometimes overlap.  They arranged their own shapes in three different compositions documenting each arrangement with the iPad camera.  They chose their favorites and began to glue the shapes down with modge podge.
