Art: Triangles Everywhere

We started out the year making a mess...on paper.  The girls used crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils, markers, and water colors to "cover the page". They covered three pages - different sizes and different textured papers.  Then, inspired by the work of Lecia Dole-Recio, they made triangle compositions.  All the girls in the Lower School did this unit... each student's individual style, perspective, and problem solving strategies are unique and the whole body of work demonstrates our creative diversity!

Technology: We have an app for that!

The girls have been very busy learning a variety of new apps, both in the classroom, during art, french and technology. Here is a list of the apps they have been using:

Scribble My Story - we created an autobiography
My Story - we began our ABC book
Bugs and Bubbles
                                     Tangrams
                                     Magnabet
                                     Art Set

OUR FIRST VISIT TO THE OWL GATE

This week our focus has been the letter O. We made our first visit to make wishes on the Owl Gate.
It was such fun watching each girl take great care as she decided her wish! We captured these moments and hope you enjoy these pictures.

In science we continue to observe, predict and record both with drawings and using our iPads.  We are excited to watch the hungry caterpillars grow as they eat milk weed leaves.  We are enjoying listening to many books about the journey of the Monarch Butterfly.

Busy in Technology

The girls in Kindergarten have been working so hard in technology.  We began the year with a discussion about the acceptable use policy and learned iPad basics.  We have been using the apps Little Writer and Face iMake.  We also learned how to create a video using the iPad camera feature.

Welcome to music class!  I am enjoying the enthusiastic singing I hear from the kindergarten class  and I'm sure we'll have a wonderful year.

Art: We are all artists!

Every student started the year by making a small 3x3 inch self-portrait. There are quite a few inherent challenges using small paper and black pen that helps the girls get comfortable right way with the art quip: "Turn your ut-oh into an ah-ha."  The girls were encouraged to make a clear choice in their work; to be bold. The works are on display at the entrance of the art studio with the following questions to guide their observations: Which portraits show that the artist used line variation? Which portraits show that the artist made a discovery about herself, her art, or her materials? Which portraits show that the artist tried the blind contour technique to record her observations without looking? Which portraits show that the artist made a clear choice about line, shape texture, value, or space) in her work? In art this year we will make art, look at art and talk about art! We are all artists!

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to our kindergarten blog! We will use this space to post many of the wonderful activities we enjoy in our classroom. Check back regularly for pictures and anecdotes from our busy and fun-filled days.

We have had a wonderful start to the year!  The girls have been busy getting to know each other through games, songs, special friends, and structured play time. We are practicing our first value for the year, cooperation. The girls must cooperate each and every day to complete projects, to play games on the playground, and to clean up when needed. They are doing a wonderful job and have earned their first value sticker for their daisy. We hope that by the end of the year there will be a Bryn Mawr value on each and every daisy petal!

The arrival of some cool fall weather has been so inviting that we have enjoyed exploring the Bryn Mawr campus. There are so many interesting buildings, flowers, and trees - not to mention the BIG girls! We will continue to explore the campus throughout the year as it changes with the seasons.

We are so excited that our Monarch caterpillars have arrived! The eggs arrived late last week and they hatched over the weekend. There are now about 10 baby caterpillars on our milkweed plant and they are getting bigger every day. As scientists we are practicing our predicting, observing, and recording skills. We can't wait to see what happens to our caterpillars!
